Unlike most interior and exterior damage that can be seen at eye level, assessing sustained roof damage involves a closer look. Climbing onto the roof of a storm-damaged structure is required. Standard safety measures must be taken in order to perform a roof inspection.

• Hail damage to asphalt shingles may include granule loss, material loss on the edge of a shingle, and even penetration of the shingles themselves. New asphalt shingles are more resistant to hail impact than older ‘more brittle’ asphalt shingles….because asphalt becomes more brittle with age.
• Most hail-related damage is cosmetic and will not affect the life of the roof’s shingles. In cases of severe granule loss, shingle penetration and fracture, shingle replacement may be required.
• Except in extreme situations, do not attempt roof system repairs yourself. Roof openings should be temporarily covered with tarpaulins to minimize rain/water intrusion. Although, the task of ‘applying a tarp’ should be performed by a roofing professional, you may do so in extreme situations to mitigate further damage to a structure.
